The Slightest Gesture

Sculptor and installation artist Tabatha Andrews presents a new immersive exhibition.

Tabitha John

Sculptor and installation artist Tabatha Andrews is presenting a new immersive exhibition at Exeter Phoenix from 26 April to 21 June.

The Slightest Gesture focuses on themes of movement and touch and explores how everyday gestures translate into sculptural form.

It presents works created from a variety of materials, including video and sound, which invite the viewer to contemplate the physical relationship between the human body and sculpted art.

The exhibition is part of a project co-created by Tabatha Andrews with South West Dance Hub, an initiative that allows artists to share and learn from one another’s skills, and Freefall Plus, a youth group that enables young people with physical and learning disabilities to engage with the arts.

It is informed by workshops with Freefall Plus group members, led by Tabatha Andrews and South West Dance Hub members, which explored the interconnectedness of movement and the theme of translation in relation to art, language and human interaction.

Tabatha Andrews is a sculptor, installation artist and lecturer at the University of Falmouth and West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.

Her art is primarily focussed on exploring relationships between memory, materials and the observer as well as how we communicate through the senses, which she visualises through immersive and tactile experiences.

She often takes a collaborative approach and has worked with people from a range of backgrounds such as composers, scientists, singers and local craft groups.

Employing diverse media including bronze, wood, textiles, glass, performance, light, sound and film, she is particularly interested in the relationship between art and science.
