Handel’s Messiah

A seasonal choral performance by Exeter Cathedral Choir with early music specialists Devon Baroque.

Exeter Cathedral Choir and early music specialists Devon Baroque orchestra are to perform Handel’s Messiah on Sunday 8 December in Exeter Cathedral.

Messiah was composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741 and first performed the following year in Dublin. It is one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in the repertoire.

Exeter Cathedral Choir is composed of around 38 girl and boy choristers aged from 7 to 13 years old who attend Exeter Cathedral School. It leads around eight services at the cathedral each week during term-time.

Devon Baroque orchestra formed in 1999. It performs chamber music on period instruments and has given over 120 concerts in cathedrals, churches, concert halls and private venues.

Exeter Cathedral, properly known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in Exeter, is a medieval Anglican church and the seat of the Bishop of Exeter.

The current building was completed around 1400.

Handel’s Messiah begins at 2.30pm on Sunday 8 December 2024.

Tickets cost from £15-26 plus booking fees and can be bought from the Exeter Cathedral website.

Concert proceeds will support Exeter Cathedral Music Foundation.
