Quayside Shanty Festival

Free one-day festival to feature shanties from Boscastle Buoys, Mariners Away, The Rusty Tubs and more.

Exeter Quay is hosting a festival of shanty singing at venues including The Port Royal, The Bishop Blaize and The Coffee Cellar on Saturday 14 September 2024.

The free event features The Rusty Tubs, Boscastle Buoys, Mariners Away, Barrett’s Privateers and Bow Movement, among others.

Shanties are traditional folk songs historically sung to accompany rhythmical labour aboard large merchant sailing vessels.

They are now performed a capella by groups and choirs alongside other folk and sea songs.
