Exeter St David’s station has least reliable passenger lifts in Devon

Peter Cleasby

Exeter St David’s station has the least reliable passenger lifts in Devon, according to Network Rail figures, despite the availability of step-free access being limited to two of its six platforms.

In the eighteen months to October last year 46 faults occurred per lift at Exeter St David’s, nearly seven times as many as at Exeter Central and fifteen times the national average rate of three faults per lift during the period.

As a result, Exeter St David’s only averaged just over 28,000 passengers per lift fault while 325,000 passengers passed through Exeter Central between faults.

Network Rail claimed that the lifts at Exeter St David’s saw considerably more wear and tear than those elsewhere in Devon because of the station’s high passenger numbers.

It added that it would carry out further maintenance to the station’s lifts before their planned replacement sometime next year.
