Exeter Corn Exchange still loss-making despite increased ticket sales

Leigh Curtis

City council-owned and run Exeter Corn Exchange, which hosts live performance and other events, made a net loss in 2023-24 despite an increase in ticket sales.

The venue hosted nearly 250 events during the year, of which 45% were external hires. It sold 42,000 tickets for the 135 events it hosted itself, an average of 311 per show.

Income from ticket sales was £868,000, an increase of a third from £635,000 the previous year.

However the venue’s overall financial performance, despite bar and food income also increasing and Exeter Tickets opening in a street-level retail unit, has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.

On a 2023-24 total turnover of £1,228,000 (including VAT) the venue made a net loss of £9,000. In each of the two years before the pandemic it made net profits of £36,000 and £35,000.
