Devon Ukrainian Association is hosting a series of events to bring communities across the county together around the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s declaration of independence.
The celebrations begin on Sunday 15 August with the display of a Rushnyk at 11am in Cathedral Green.
The 700 metre-long embroidered ceremonial cloth, titled Rushnyk of Unity – Rushnyk of Victory, has been made by hundreds of people across Europe, including in Ukraine.
Then on Monday 24 August, 35 years to the day after Ukraine declared its independence, Ukrainian community members will gather with civic representatives, local organisations and supporters for a formal commemoration at 11am at the civic centre in Paris Street.
Following a flag-raising ceremony, attendees will march together to the Devon Ukrainian Association headquarters in North Street for a reception and awards ceremony, with Ukraine independence day events continuing with traditional food, creative workshops and a concert at 5pm at Parkfield House in Paignton.
A 2-5 kilometre run in honour of the defenders of Ukraine will then take place on Saturday 29 August, setting off at 9am from the Haven Banks side of Cricklepit Bridge – where the railings have been adorned with love locks.
The celebrations will then culminate later that day at Exeter Quay with a yarmarok – a traditional fair or market – offering Ukrainian food, stalls, music, dance, performances and family-friendly activities from 11am to 5pm.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022, starting the largest and deadliest war in Europe since World War II.
Founded in response to the war, Devon Ukrainian Association is a community-led organisation dedicated to supporting Ukrainians living in Devon and across the south west.
It fosters community cohesion, provides cultural, educational, emotional and practical support for displaced Ukrainians and champions Ukrainian culture, language and civic identity.
Devon Ukrainian Association’s celebration of Ukraine’s 35th anniversary takes place from Saturday 15 to Saturday 29 August 2026 at venues in Exeter city centre and Paignton.
